William A. Schermerhorn, 74, of Goshen, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Riverside Village, Elkhart.
    
    
   
  
   
    He was born in South Bend, March 24, 1943 to Max M. and Eleanor (Grindle) Schermerhorn.
    
    
   
  
   
    He is survived by two children, Renee (Todd) Beckrich of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Paul (Alice) Schermerhorn of Williston, Vermont; two grandsons, Max and Will Schermerhorn and a sister, Carol Bell of Goshen.
    
    
   
  
   
    A 1961 graduate of John Adams High School, Mr. Schermerhorn served as a military policeman with the U.S. Army while stationed in Germany.
    
    
   
  
   
    He graduated from law enforcement academy and retired from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department in 1997 after 23 years of service.  He went through computer training with the sheriff’s department and was one of the first lie detector operators.
    
    
   
  
   
    He was a loyal Notre Dame football fan.
    
    
   
  
   
    Friends may call Friday, April 28, 2017, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.  Chaplain John Utley will officiate.
    
    
   
  
Burial will follow in Elkhart Prairie Cemetery.
