William K. Brainard, 98, a beloved member of the Goshen community where he lived for 96 years, died Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at Magnolia Springs Assisted Living.
He was born February 28, 1923, in Goshen to Claude and Isabelle (Kinley) Brainard.
On October 17, 1942, he married Phyllis P. Zentz in Goshen. She died April 9, 2004. He later married Iva May (Fields) Riley, who died August 3, 2019.
He is survived by a granddaughter, Christina (Howie) Jones of Carmel; great-grandsons, Matthew and Ryan Jones of Carmel; a son-in- law, Donald Cleveland of Fishers; a nephew, Jim Brainard of Carmel; a niece, Carol (Bob) Jones of Germantown, Maryland; and a sister-in-law, Dortha Brainard of Bristol.
Along with his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Paula Cleveland and a brother, Jack D. Brainard.
Bill was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, Goshen and active at West Goshen Church of the Brethren, after his marriage to Iva. Bill worked in men’s retail clothing and served as Elkhart Township Trustee for 12 years.
A U.S. Army veteran, Bill was a member of the Goshen American Legion; V.F.W.; D.A.V.; and Masonic Lodge #12
Visitation will be Thursday, December 9, 2021, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home where a 1:30 p.m., funeral service will be conducted. Pastor Joel DeSelm, West Goshen Church of the Brethren, will officiate
Burial, with military honors, will follow at Violett Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be given to Goshen DAV#15 or Magnolia Springs Bridgewater Impact Life Program.
