Wayne “Jake” Hoffman, 83, of Goshen died Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at Courtyard Healthcare. He had been in failing health for 2 years.
He was born June 11, 1933 in Goshen to Arthur and Edna (Smetzer) Hoffman
In June 1956 he married Patricia Chrispyn. She died June 30, 1995
Survivors include two children, Monica (Enos) Yoder and Mitchell (Beth) Hoffman, both of Goshen: seven grandchildren; Kevin (Brittany) Yoder, Kristi (Jim) Baker, Jeffrey Yoder, Jordan Hoffman, Chad Yoder, Jacob (Emily) Hildenbrand, Ryan Hildenbrand; six great grandchildren; a sister, Delores Hurtle of Goshen; and two brothers, Dewey (Beatrice) Hoffman of St Louis, Missouri and Donald (Betty) Hoffman of Goshen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Michael Hoffman; a sister, Carol Stark and three brothers, Reese, Lyle, and Paul Hoffman.
Jake took over the family farm and was a lifelong farmer, along with driving school bus for Concord Schools for 40 years.
Jake was passionate about sports. He was a member of the Elkhart County Sports Hall of Fame as a result of his Concord High School career, which included playing on Concord’s first Boys basketball sectional title team in 1949.
He was an avid card player, bowler, softball player, and Notre Dame Girls basketball fan. He took a special interest in his grandchildren’s sporting events.
Jake attended Sugar Grove Church.
Friends may call Sunday, July 31, 2016 from 1 to 6 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home where a 10 a.m., funeral service will be conducted on Monday, August 1, 2016. Pastor Cary Perdue will officiate.
Burial will follow in Violett Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to Sugar Grove Church.
