Walter L. Miller, 83, of Goshen, died Tuesday morning, June 17, 2008, at his home in Greencroft. He was born March 23, 1925 in Middlebury to Homer and Vera (Weister) Miller. He married Jean K. Kemp on August 25, 1946 in New Paris. She preceded him in death on August 17, 1999. A Goshen resident for most of his life, Mr. Miller graduated from Goshen High School in 1943 where he played on the basketball team that won the 1942 sectional title by beating Elkhart High School. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II on a LCM (landing craft). He was a life long member of the VFW Post #985 in Goshen. Mr. Miller worked as a fireman for the Goshen Fire Department, retiring in 1971 after 22 years of service. He then was self employed as an interior decorator and handyman. He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Mary C. Miller of Matthews, North Carolina; five grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and two brothers, Cecil R. (Jeanette) Miller of Goshen and Max M. (Marge) Miller of Nappanee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; a son, Rick W. Miller; and a daughter, Amy Conners. Friends will be received 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 19 at the funeral home. A 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 20, 2008, funeral service will be conducted at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Nephew, Gary Miller of the New Life Christian Center, Bristol will officiate. Burial will be in New Paris Cemetery, New Paris. Memorial contributions may be made to Goshen Care at Home Hospice or the VFW.
