Virginia Lorene Stalter Kreider was born May 19, 1921 in Chenoa, Illinois, daughter of Daniel D. and Alice (Miller) Stalter, and died on March 20, 2017 at Greencroft in Goshen.
After receiving teacher training at Goshen College, Virginia taught for one year in a one-room school house in Woodford County, Illinois before marrying J. Robert Kreider (of Wadsworth, Ohio) on June 10, 1941.
Virginia joined Robert at the Civilian Public Service Camp 24, Unit 4 in Clear Spring, Maryland, where she worked as dietician and matron. After the war, the Kreiders moved to Wadsworth, Ohio, where, as a pastor’s wife at Bethel Mennonite Church (1945-1956), she joined Robert in visitation, serving on church committees, the Women’s Missionary Sewing Circle, and hosting visiting speakers and evangelists. In 1965, the family moved to Goshen, where Robert served as college administrator (1956-1985).
She and Robert moved into Greencroft (2008) where she was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, and then four years later by her dear friend Don Snyder and her beloved daughter-in-law Kay (Sutter) Kreider.
Virginia is survived by five sons, J. Evan (Janice Aeschliman), Vancouver, Canada, Paul (the late Kay Sutter), Seattle, Washington, Mark (Amy Hill), New York, New York, Bruce (Charlotte Unruh), North Newton, Kansas and Frank (Lori Fritter), Jackson, Michigan; by grandchildren Vivian (Stephen Deal), Aaron (Julia Stone), Kara, Alyssa (William Sunderland), Kristin, Michael, Christopher (Sofaia), and Nicholas; by great granddaughters Katelyn and Elizabeth Kreider and great grandsons Yuri and Gareth Sunderland and Nolan Kreider; by two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Burkholder Kreider, Ruth Kreider Heatwole, a brother-in-law, Kenneth Heatwole and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Virginia was also preceded in death by her three sisters, Gladys Reedy, Ferne Yordy, Marjorie Summer and five brothers, Irvin, Lloyd, Wilbert, Milo and Orval Stalter.
Private internment will be at the Violet Cemetery.
Visitation is Friday, March 24, 2017, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Evergreen Place, The Gathering Room at 1300 Greencroft Drive.
The memorial service will be held at the College Mennonite Church, Fellowship Hall, 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 25, 2017.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Mennonite Mission Network, Goshen College or a charity of your choice.
