Verlyn L. “Doc” Harris, 81, of Goshen, died early Thursday morning, May 4, 2006, at Greencroft Gables where he had been a patient just one day. He was born April 4, 1925, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, to Leslie F. and Isa (Stillwell) Harris. On August 17, 1947, he married Rosalyn J. Spencer in Lawton, Michigan. She survives. Mr. Harris had lived in Goshen from 1953 to 1988, at which time he moved to Wolcottville. He moved back to Goshen in 1995. Treasurer of Reith-Riley Construction Company, Goshen, he retired April 1, 1988, after 37 years. He had also served on the Board of Directors. A 1943 graduate of Lawton High School, he graduated from Western Michigan University in 1950. A World War II Navy veteran, he served aboard the USS Nickel. He was a member and former deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. In his retirement he enjoyed golfing. Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Rosalyn; a daughter, Debra L. (Steve) Wolfe of Indianapolis, Indiana; two sons, Larry S. (Bobbie) Harris of South Bend, Indiana, and Steven M. (Sandy) Harris of Goshen; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Robert L. (Margaret) Harris of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and a sister, Geraldine June (Conrad) Jankowski of West Hyannisport, Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Erica McCoy and Lawrence Harris. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, May 7, at the funeral home. A 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 8, 2006, funeral service will be conducted at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Rev. Alan Griffin of the First Presbyterian Church, Goshen, and Dr. James Bennett, retired Missionary Church minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
