Verda M. Haney, 81, of Goshen passed away peacefully at home on July 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous 17-month battle with mesothelioma.
She was born on January 4, 1944, in Goshen, to Sylvester and Sylvia (Miller) Chupp. On May 4, 1963, she married the love of her life, Charles Haney, who preceded her in death on May 6, 2023.
Verda is survived by her children; Jeff (Carrie) Haney of Syracuse, and Kim (Jeryl) Miller of Goshen; three beloved grandchildren, Tyler (Elizabeth) Miller of Canton, IL, Alex Haney of Indianapolis, and Brooke (Alan) Rivera of Goshen; three step-grandchildren, Dustin (Lauren) Graber of Houston, TX, Kelsie (Omar) Shoukry of Lexington, KY, and Shelby (Drew) Sauder of Louisville, KY; two precious step-great-grandchildren, Talia and Lina Shoukry of Lexington, KY; and one sister-in-law, Karen Chupp of Goshen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles, her twin brother Verlin “Sonny” Chupp, Al Chupp, and her sister, Lila Christner.
Verda lived a life marked by service, love, and unwavering faith. She faithfully cared for her husband Chuck during his own battle with cancer. She had a servant’s heart and modeled what a Christian woman should be. She devoted herself to her grandchildren-leaving her job to provide care not just for them, but for many other children over the course of 20 years. To many, she was affectionately known as “Grandma Verda,” a title she wore with pride and deep affection.
She also worked in the Goshen Community Schools cafeteria for several years, a role that allowed her to be near the children she loved so dearly. A faithful member of New Paris Missionary Church, Verda served in the nursery where her love for children continued to shine.
She religiously attended her grandchildren’s sporting events or anything else they were involved in. She loved Southern Gospel music, putting puzzles together, word searches, and caring for her beloved cats, Peanut and Tommy.
When diagnosed with cancer in February 2024, Verda created a bucket list at the encouragement of her family. She called it her “victory tour,” which she completed in May 2025. She later added one final wish: to participate in the 34th annual family lake week over the Fourth of July, a tradition she treasured-and one she fulfilled.
Verda will be deeply missed but her legacy of love, faith, and service will live on in all who were blessed to know her.
Visitation for Verda will be held on Sunday, July 27 from 2-8 p.m. at New Paris Missionary Church, 67621 IN-15, New Paris, and one hour prior to the 2 p.m. funeral service on Monday, July 28, also at New Paris Missionary Church.
Burial will follow the service in Miller 8 Square.
