Thomas Conway Hossler, 78, of South Bend, died early Sunday morning, February 8, 2009, at the St. Joseph County Hospice House in South Bend, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Pierceton, Indiana, on August 20, 1930, to Robert C. and Florence (Trainor) Hossler. He married Cecilia Choo on September 23, 1992 in Denmark. She survives. Mr.Hossler moved to South Bend in 2006 from Bristol. He graduated in 1973 from the University of Maryland. A career Army man, Mr. Hossler retired as a Sergeant Major with the 294th USA Artillery Group in 1977. He served in Korea and in Vietnam where he participated, as a member of the “Mighty 9th” in the Tet counter offensives IV and V . He also served in Germany four times and once in Turkey. He was highly decorated, including the Bronze Star in 1968. Mr. Hossler spoke three languages and enjoyed the outdoors. He is survived by his wife, Cecilia; three daughters, Barbara (Glenn) Ervin of Washburn, Missouri, Angie Hossler and Janie Hossler, both of Denver, Colorado; two sons, Michael (Sharon) Barrick of Goshen and Thomas Hossler of Denver, Colorado; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Lou Richmond of Elkhart; and a brother, Stan (Roberta) Hossler of White Pigeon, Michigan. He was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Hossler; and two brothers, Ronald and Donald Hossler. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, February 10, and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. A 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 11, 2009, funeral service will be held at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Pastor Jason Kincaid of First Assembly of God Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House in South Bend.
