Terry T. Snyder

April 17, 1941 — April 13, 2019

Terry T. Snyder, 77, of Goshen passed away Saturday, April 13, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born April 17, 1941 in Goshen to Rayburn L. and Martha (Wilden) Snyder.  He graduated Goshen High School with the class of 1959.

On August 11, 1963 he married Shirley A. Snook.

She survives along with a daughter, Laura (Dave) Sloan of Greenwood; four sons, Jack (Leslie) Snyder of Indio, California, David Snyder (Amber Bailey) of Goshen, Todd Snyder of Goshen and John Snyder (Kayla Buck) of Elkhart; and 11 grandchildren, Kelley, Cameron, Jacob, Noah, Lauren, Ethan, Sydney, Michael, Erik, Carson, and Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Wilden, Wilson, David and twin brother, Jerry Snyder.

Terry grew up helping his father, Rayburn, in the family construction business and became an electrician.  He was the youngest licensed electrician in Indiana at the age of 16.  He founded his business, Snyder Electric, in 1958 and continued to own and operate the business for 61 years.  He was appointed city electrician by Mayor Ralph Schenk during the 1970’s.  During that time, he created what is known today as the Goshen City Building Department.  He was appointed as the first building commissioner in 1969, which he continued until 1980.  He was the plumbing, heating, electrical, and housing inspector for the city of Goshen.

He was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church.  He was a senior high sponsor, participated in several work camp trips, served as Deacon, and served as a Sunday School teacher.

Terry valued the Goshen community and its citizens; because of that, he was actively involved in many areas.  He was the first president of the first Building Trades Class for Goshen High School, where three homes were completed in his three-year term.  He owned and operated Hay Oil Company for three years.

Terry was also a passionate politician.  He was an active member of the Elkhart Republican Central Committee and the Goshen City Republican Committee for many years.  He was elected to the office of Elkhart County Assessor from 1994 to 1999.  He served for over 30 years as a precinct committeeman.  He was currently the Republican mayoral candidate for the city of Goshen.

Terry was very involved in his children’s lives and their activities.  He coached little league baseball for three seasons.  He began his service to Scouting in 1974 when he became assistant Cubmaster in Pack 89 at St. John’s Catholic Church.  After one year, he became the Cubmaster.  He was also active in the Camp Fire Girls in Goshen serving on the board in various capacities for 10 years.

He built and maintained a Moto/BMX Cross Track on property he owned.  Recognized races were held almost every Saturday for two years where his sons and daughter all raced.  After that, he continued helping in the racing sport as a track official at other tracks throughout the state.

Whenever possible, Terry would attend his grandchildren’s sporting events.  He was extremely proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments.  Terry welcomed anyone and everyone into his home throughout the years.  He was a father figure to many of his children’s friends.
