Steven D. Swartzendruber, 53, of Auburn and formerly of Goshen, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at Wesley Health Care, where he had been since Oct. 2013. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2004. He was born Dec. 5, 1960 in Goshen to Harold and Lucille (Graber) Swartzendruber. Steve is survived by his mother, Lucille Swartzendruber of Goshen; a sister, Janet Reid of Charlottesville, Va.; and a brother, James (Tina) Swartzendruber of Goshen. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, David Swartzendruber. A 1978 graduate of Goshen High School, Steve earned his bachelor's degree at Goshen College in 1982 and his master's degree from Indiana University, Indianapolis. Steve worked as a regional manager for Wendy's for seven years and then as a hospital administrator in Albion, Michigan and Defiance, Ohio. A tennis player, Steve played competitively at both Goshen High School and Goshen College. He played trumpet in the Goshen High School marching band and in the Goshen Collelge Jazz Band. Friends may call Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Koinonia Room at College Mennonite Church where the funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. Pastors Phil Waite and Pamela Yoder will officiate. Burial will follow in Violett Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association.
