Stanley J. Hulewicz, 82, of Goshen, died Tuesday morning, July 4, 2006, at his home. He had been in failing health the past few years. He was born September 25, 1923, in Belarus, to Ivan and Fenia (Kiroenko) Mudrak. He married Maria Turchyn Prokopenko on February 2, 1947, in Windsheim, Germany. She survives. He left Belaurs at the age of 17 and worked for the U.S. Army as a driver in Illesheim, Germany after World War II. He came to the U.S. on the General Taylor ship and lived in New Jersey a short time before coming to Goshen in 1954. Mr. Hulewicz was well known for his love of America, its principles of independence and freedom, and was forever grateful for the opportunities given him and his family. Mr. Hulewicz retired from Penn Controls in 1988 after 32 years. He also worked at Excel Rubber. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Goshen. He enjoyed freshwater fishing and hunting. He worked for many years at revitalizing an old orchard which allowed him to see much of his fruit, primarily apples, for which he was well known. Mr. Hulewicz is survived by his wife, Maria; two daughters, Olga Stickel of Goshen and Valentina (George) Bachnivsky of Huntington, Indiana; a son, John (Debra) Hulewicz of Elkhart, Indiana; six grandchildren; and a sister, Tatianya (Ivan) Yankovska of Belarus. He was preceded in death by a brother, Vasyl and a sister, Polina. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 6, at the funeral home where a Panakhyda Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. A 10:00 a.m., funeral service will be held on Friday, July 7, 2006, at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Goshen. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Goshen.
