Stanford R. Swoveland

December 25, 1931 — March 11, 2018

Stanford “Gramps” R. Swoveland, 86, of Goshen, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2018 at The Maples at Waterford Crossing.

He was born December 25, 1931 in New Paris to Earl G. and Ruth (Brumbaugh) Swoveland.

On October 7, 1951 he married Peggy Lou Stump in Goshen.  She passed away October 12, 2012.

Survivors include four children, Cynthia Ressler, Pamela Swoveland, David (Tobi) Swoveland and Thomas (Ronda) Swoveland, all of Goshen; grandchildren, Nicola Mitchell, Shonda O’Brien, Robb (Brittany) Ressler and Amanda and Victoria Snyder; great-grandchildren, Joshua Wilson, Shatoria (Chris) Lawson, Isaiah Mitchell, Kip Mankhwala, Conrad and Rylee O’Brien, Jessica Wissman, Vivienne and Evelyn Ressler and Max, Dom, and Landon Johnson; a great-great-grandson, Cameron Lawson along with special nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Orley, Junior and Grover Swoveland and sisters, Hazel Defreese, Flossie Hoover, Ruby Fry and Corabelle Weaver Dickison.

A 1949 graduate of Goshen High School, he worked as a saw operator for AC Fabricating after being employed at various trailer factories.  He was a member of LifePoint Church, Goshen, and life member of Goshen Moose, Fellowship of the Moose and Legion of the Moose.  At the Moose he was known as “Stan, the popcorn man” because he made popcorn on Friday nights.

For two years, 1957-1958, he ran the bowling alley for the Elkhart YWCA. He was a pinsetter when in 7th grade for a bowling alley in Goshen.

A special thanks to Krista Russell, Alexandra Smith & Kenya Gilyard for their love and support; to the nurses at Harbor Light Hospice for the excellent care they gave to Gramps and the staff at The Maples; Chaplain Michael Pennington and Grace Community Church for providing the meal.

Friends may call Wednesday, March 14, 2018, from 2 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, March 15, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.  Chaplain Michael Pennington, Elkhart County Sherriff’s Department, will officiate.

Burial will follow in West Goshen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Harbor Light Hospice.
