Shirley A. Swartz, 87, Goshen, died at 7:42 p.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at Miller's Merry Manor in Wakarusa after a three-month illness.
She was born September 21, 1931 in Goshen to Wilfred M. and Mary Ellen (Strock) Marquis. They resided for several years at 216 Gra-Roy Drive in Goshen.
On December 28, 1948 Shirley married Richard M. Swartz in Goshen. He died September 18, 1998.
For the past 67 years she lived at 122 West Wilden in Goshen, a house that has been in the Marquis-Swartz family since 1912.
Surviving are son Stu of Goshen; daughters Margaret Kuiper and Sandy Swartz of Goshen and Sarah (Derek) Brady of Mishawaka; and a brother, Don Marquis of New Orleans.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren - Lisa, Pieter, Brent, Luke, Megan, Ivan and Maranda; and five great grandchildren - Emily, Wes, KaiDyn, Thysa and Mia. Another great grandchild is due next week and another in April.
Shirley was recently preceded in death by a brother, Tom Marquis, on July 12, 2018.
A homemaker all of her life, Shirley once worked part-time at the former Jack 'n' Jill Shoppe for children's clothing in downtown Goshen.
She was also involved in Mothers of Preschoolers and a reading program for Goshen Community Schools.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home in Goshen where the Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
A funeral mass is scheduled for Wednesday, December 12, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, where she was a member, with Father Royce Gregerson.
Burial will be in Violett Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Derek Brady, Carl Hubbell, Pieter Kuiper, Brent Kuiper, Westyn Parrick, Jeromy Sheets and Luke Nisley (honorary).
Memorials may be made to Goshen Home Care and Hospice.
