Shirley Pitts Edwards, 92, of Goshen, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2016, at IU Health Goshen Hospital.
She was born October 2, 1923 in Evanston, Illinois to John Beman and Alva (Tuerk) Pitts.
Mrs. Edwards is survived by two daughters, Judy (Daniel) Helm of Denver, Colorado and Jill (Doug) Perry of Goshen; five grandchildren, Heather Perry (Todd) Berkey, Dale (Cortnie) Perry, Amber Perry (Ben) Illingworth, Matthew (Michell) Helm and Kristin Helm Henry and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister, Barbara Pitts Olsen.
Shirley was raised in Winnetka and Waukegan, Illinois. She studied voice with Florence Farrar in Zion, Illinois and the two of them joined an opera group in Chicago. Her last voice teacher was Raymond Hoch of the Sherwood Music School, Chicago.
On June 17, 1948 she married Sherman L. Edwards, part owner of Peterson Funeral Home. He died in March 1972.
In 1977 Shirley moved to California where she lived until moving to Greencroft in 2003.
In 2008, at the age of 85, Shirley gave a semi-classical recital and in 2009, she presented a sacred recital.
Private services will be held.
Memorial contributions may be given to Elkhart County Humane Society.
