Gardner “Ryan” Smith, 48, of Goshen, died Monday, July 24, 2023 in St. Joseph County, due to injuries from a traffic accident.

He was born April 4, 1975 in Goshen to Scott and Brenda (Gardner) Smith.

They survive along with a brother, Scott E. Smith II, of Washington DC, and his faithful canine companion, Fletch.

Ryan was a 1993 graduate of Fairfield High School where he participated in wrestling, tennis & FFA.  He obtained multiple master’s degrees from Ball State University. He attended Silverwood Mennonite Church and worked for the City of Elkhart Planning Department. He was involved in the community through different programs, including Trees for Goshen and LaCasa.

Gardner was unique and had a wide variety of interests. He enjoyed many styles of music, art, nature, snow skiing and snowboarding, traveling, photography and was quiet with a very dry wit.

A memorial service will take place Sunday, August 20, 2023 at 3 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Pastor Mike Overpeck will officiate.

Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to Trees for Goshen, Elkhart County Humane Society or Silverwood Mennonite Church.
