Ruth E. Shaum, 95, of Goshen, died late Sunday afternoon, March 3, 2024 at Greencroft Healthcare.

She was born April 1, 1928 in Clinton Township to Ezra and Vivian (Johns) Schlabach.

She married Paul E. Shaum on April 17, 1965 in Goshen. He preceded her in death in 2013. She became a step-mother to his seven children, and step-grandmother to three grandchildren upon their marriage. They then had one son, Jerrol (Mary Ann Weber) Shaum of Goshen, who survives.

Also surviving are three step-daughters, Norma Chatfield of Roswell, Georgia, Carolyn (Richard) Coddens and Elizabeth (Randy) Noland of South Bend; two step-sons, Steven (Kelly) Shaum of Nappanee and Randall (Jean) Shaum of Two Rivers, Wisconsin; 13 step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Dorvin (Ruth) Schlabach; and one sister, Arleta Kilmer.

She was preceded in death by two step-daughters; Phyllis (George) Keller and Marolyn Millar; a step-grandson, Adam Shaum; one sister, Eudean (Emil) Broni; and three brothers, Richard, Dale (Vivian), and Theron Schlabach.

She was a founding member of the Benton Mennonite Church where she remained an active participant until shortly before her death. There, her servant heart was nurture and demonstrated by the numerous roles she took on, as well as in outreach to the community, her profession as an RN, and involvement on the board of LaCasa.

A caregiver her whole life, she will be missed by all who knew her, but we know that she is now in the loving care of the God and Savior she loved so well.

Visitation will be Friday, March 8, 2024 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.

A private burial will take place at Olive West Cemetery.

A celebration of life will be Saturday, March 9 at 11 a.m. at Benton Mennonite Church. Becky Helmuth will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be directed to New Paris World Missionary Press, Mennonite Mission Network or Alzheimer Foundation.
