Roger Lee Symensma

October 24, 1943 — December 28, 2021

Dr. Roger Lee Symensma, 78, formerly of New Paris, passed away December 28, 2021 in Valencia, California. Born on October 24, 1943, he was the son of the late Charles Jr and Theda (Showalter) Symensma.

Roger enjoyed his childhood on a dairy farm in New Paris.  After graduating from New Paris High School in 1961, he enlisted in the US Navy stationed in San Diego and served during the Vietnam War. The Navy ships took him on adventures around the world including Hong Kong, New Zealand and Antarctica. After the service, he pursued his dream by enrolling in veterinary studies through Purdue University. He married Diane Marie Emmert in 1969 in Millersburg. Upon receiving his Doctorate Degree, he practiced large animal veterinary medicine in Illinois, Wisconsin, and with the USDA in Iowa and Indiana.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and a niece.  He leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Diane (Emmert) formerly of Syracuse, a daughter Tonia (Michael) Cohen of Valencia, California; a son Lon (financee Katie LaSalle) of Denver Colorado; one granddaughter, Savanna Grace of Valencia California; a sister Gloria Ackerson (special friend Jerry McClarren) of Washington; and a brother Kenneth (Donna) of Canton Ohio, five nephews and beloved family and friends.

Roger was a loving father and husband with a deep faith in God, a kind smile and a gentle soul. He always provided for his family, told great stories and showed tremendous compassion to people and animals. He will be remembered as a respected veterinarian and Sunday school teacher. We rejoice that Roger no longer struggles with dementia and ALS and his health has been restored in the presence of God.
