Robert D. Lung, 83, of Goshen, died early Sunday morning, July 19, 2009, at Courtyard Healthcare where he was admitted on May 19. He was born in Syracuse on May 3, 1926, to the late Raymond and Zelma (Hanshew) Lung. He married LaWanda “Wanda” M. Carpenter on June 29 in Goshen. She survives. A Goshen High School graduate, Mr. Lung served with in the 9th Air Force as a bombardier on a B17 bomber in Europe during World War II. He worked as office manager for 32 years at Abshire Oil Company and then for seven years at Goshen Public Library. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Goshen, and volunteered with the American Red Cross for 55years, first as a First Aid Instructor and later as a blood bank volunteer. He served on the Goshen Police Reserve for 25 years and 20 of those years as Police Reserve Chief. He was a 65 year member of the American Legion; a member of the VFW Moose Lodge; a life member of the Elks Goshen Lodge #798; a member of the Masonic Lodge #12, F & AM 32nd Degree Mason; a member of Shriners of North America ancient accepted Scottish Rights Valley of South Bend; the National Rifle Association; and AARP. In 2001 he received an Outstanding Citizen Award from Indiana State Representative John Ulmer. He is survived by his wife, Wanda; a son, Scott R. (Molly Leatherman) Lung of Goshen; a daughter, Stacy L. Lung of Lakeland, Florida; a granddaughter, Sara Lung; and three sisters, Lucille (Roy) Culp, Helen Schreck, and Susie Warner, all of Goshen. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dean, Raymond “Buzz” and Lester Lung; and a sister, Isabelle Stouder. Friends may call 3 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 21, with a 7:45 p.m., Masonic Service; and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 22, 2009, funeral service will be held at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Rev. Michael Tarner of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
