Robert Lee Layman, 56, of Rowland Heights, California, formerly of Elkhart County, Indiana, died March 23, 2014 at his home of natural causes. He was born May 30, 1957 in Elkhart to John F. and Kathy (Roberts) Godshalk. On May 19, 1979 he married Yong-ae Kim in Elkhart. He is survived by a daughter, Valerie Sinclair, of Goshen; a son, Bruce Layman, of Mishawaka; his father, John, of Sturgis, Michigan; four grandchildren, Hahkeem and Blake Layman and D'Ahjahnay and Dujuan Ware; a sister, Anna Marie Ferguson, of Elkhart; two brothers, John (Vicki) Layman, of Cromwell, and Tony (Marie) Layman, of Bergton, Virginia, and a half brother, Ray Sergeant, of Union, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his mother and a granddaughter, Da'Jeianna Smith. Mr. Layman served in the U.S. Army 1975-79 with a tour in the Rep. of South Korea. He had an ingenious and imaginative mind which he used to work and collaborate on a number of successful patents. He also worked locally for many years at Royal Coach as an electrician. Visitation will be one hour prior to the 2 pm Saturday, April 5, 2014, memorial service at Stone's Hill Community Church, 151 W Stones Hill Rd, Ligonier. Cremation has taken place in California. Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, is assisting the family with local arrangements.
