Robert E. "Gene" West, 86, of Goshen, died unexpectedly and suddenly at his home Tuesday evening, October 11, 2011. He was born May 22, 1925 in Seville, Illinois, to the late Everett Claude and Bessie Mae (Anderson) West. He married Norma M. Juday in Goshen on December 11, 1943. She survives. Also surviving are a son; Dan L. (Ruth) West of Goshen and a daughter; Judy A. (Joe) French of Goshen; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol West Musser in January 1982, and a brother, Cecil West. A handyman, Mr. West could work on and fix anything and everything. He owned and operated East Side Electric until his retirement in 1998. He also owned Home Appliance Service, Wakarusa Laundromat, Goshen Cab Co. and West Auto Service. An avid Notre Dame fan, he liked cars and racing. He also served on the Resident Council at Manor II, Greencroft. A life member of Goshen VFW Post #985, he was a WW II Navy veteran, serving in Charleston, North Carolina from 1943-45, on a mine cruiser. Friends may call 2-8 pm, Friday, October 14 and one hour prior to the 10:00 am, Saturday, October 15, 2011, service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Pastor Brenda Fritz, First United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial, with military honors by the Goshen Veterans' Honor Guard, will follow at Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorials may be made to Greencroft Foundation c/o Wood Shop.
