Richard J. Stutsman, 88, of Goshen died Tuesday morning, August 18, 2015 at I.U. Health Goshen Hospital after a short illness. He was born March 4, 1927 in Elkhart County to Maurice J. and Clara Ellen (Mast) Stutsman. On August 31, 1947 he married Betty D. Gouker. She survives along with their children, Elaine (Randy) Sharkey and Wayne Stutsman, both of Goshen; five grandchildren, Heather, Nick, Emily, Ellie and Elise; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Robert Stutsman and Roger (Doris Ann) Stutsman both of Elkhart; and two sisters, Jean Wogoman of Elkhart and Betty Lou Lamb of Goshen. He was preceded in death by a brother, Karl Stutzman. A lifelong area resident, Richard was a 1945 graduate of Elkhart High School and member of Goshen City Church of the Brethren, and life member of the American Legion. Mr. Stutsman served in the US Army from 1945-47 and again from 1950-53. He worked at Salem Bank for 10 years; Logan Monument for three years; and retired from the Goshen Post Office in 1982. Richard was an active volunteer at Goshen General Hospital from 1994-2013, logging more than 6200 hours. He was a licensed private pilot who loved to fly and enjoyed travelling to Germany where he made lifetime friendships. Friends may call Thursday, August 20, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service Friday, August 21, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Rev. Bev Weaver and Rev. Paul Loucks will officiate. Rev. Frank Ramirez, longtime family friend, will share personal remarks. Burial, with military honors, will follow at West Goshen Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial gifts may be directed to Goshen City Church of the Brethren or Goshen Hospital Auxiliary or Friendship Flights Foundation.
