H. Richard Rider, 85, of Goshen died Friday, October 2, 2015 at IU Health Goshen Hospital. He had been in failing health the past six months. He was born November 14, 1929 in VanWert, Ohio to Harold and Frances D. (Aman) Rider. On April 23, 1950 he married Sara Virginia "Jenny" DeGrange. She preceded him in death in Dec. 1984. He later married Patricia (Meese) Brill on May 23, 1986. She survives along with his daughter, D. Sue (Michael) Towne of Goshen; his son, Rick (Jeri) Rider of Elkhart; four grandchildren, Missy Cross, Ryan Klase, A.J. Towne and Ricky Rider; four great-grandchildren, Mason, Micah and Morgan Cross and Tyler Klase; and a sister, Charlotte "Petie" Lantz of Goshen. He is also survived by three step-children, Kathy (Steve) Mowry and Pam (Dale) Riegsecker, both of Venice, Fla., and Mike (Sally) Brill, Advance, NC along with several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren. Richard was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, where he ushered more than 40 years. While living in Venice, Florida, he ushered and attended Epiphany Cathedral Church. A United States Army veteran, Richard served for 18 months in Germany during the Cold War. He was a member of the D.A.V., the V.F.W. for 60 years, and a lifelong member of the Moose Lodge. Mr. Rider retired as vice president of the loan department at Salem Bank and Trust after 30 years of service. He also worked at Luke's jewelry during this time. Following retirement from the banking industry he used his salesman skills at Travel Wood Trailers and later at Showalter Buick, Goshen. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 6, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, with a Rosary service at 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Goshen. Rev. Father Anthony Steinacker will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial gifts may be directed to United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.
