Richard L. Cripe, 71, of Syracuse, died early Friday morning, September 18, 2009, at his home following a courageous struggle with leukemia and multiple myeloma. He had been ill since October 2008. He was born in New Paris on April 19, 1938, to Theodore and Alberta (Hollar) Cripe. He married Corinne Gibson on November 28, 1959, at the Osceola Church of the Brethren. She survives. A brick mason for 50 years, he was part owner of Neff Masonry, retiring in 2000. He graduated from New Paris High School in 1956 where he played basketball. He enjoyed sports, teasing and spending time with his grandchildren, fishing and golfing. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Scott Richard (Elisha) Cripe of New Paris, Todd L. Cripe and Craig Allen Cripe, both of Syracuse; and Kristi Diane (James H. ) Garris of New Paris; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Jeanette (Ron) Kirkdorffer, Carol (Dave) Smoker and Diana (Dave) Gross, all of New Paris; and a brother, Donald (Jan) Cripe of Waterford, Michigan. Friends may call 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, September 20, at the Maple Grove Church of the Brethren, CR 46, New Paris, and one hour prior to the service on Monday, also at the church. An 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 21, 2009, funeral service will be held at the Maple Grove Church of the Brethren. Rev. Dwayne Runkle will officiate. Cremation will follow the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be given to the Cancer Treatment Center of Goshen General Hospital.
