Ranjita (Mukherji) David, 78, of Goshen passed away on Friday, June 15, 2018 at Greencroft Healthcare.
She was born on May 18, 1940, in Calcutta, India, to Amiya and Rita (Mitter) Mukherji. She had an older brother, Arup, and a younger sister, Savita.
She graduated from high school at 15 and earned a Bachelor's degree in English at age 18. As a teenager, she played first violin in the Calcutta Symphony Orchestra. In January 1959, she married Ranji David.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, sister, and husband. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Robina and Kendal Sommers, and her grandchildren, Ben and Priya, all of Goshen, Indiana.
In 1964 she was chosen out of 5,000 applicants to be India’s Chief Guide for the New York World Fair. Because of her father’s sudden death, she was unable to attend. She worked as a secretary for the Church of Scotland Mission (Bombay), Kodaikanal International School (Kodaikanal), Woodstock School (Mussoorie), and the Evangelical Medical Fellowship of India (Ootacamund).
Ranjita moved to the United States in 1996 and has lived in Goshen ever since. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends, making “concoctions” and never using recipes. She loved visiting with friends, Bible studies, and going to plays and musicals. She deeply loved her family and helped raise her grandchildren before they went to school. She was a prayer warrior, interceding for friends and family all over the world. Ranjita enjoyed her years at Greencroft, where she received exceptional care.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 28, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at College Mennonite Church. Per Ranjita’s request, please wear bright colors as it is a celebration! A time of visitation will follow service from 7:00-9:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Greencroft Goshen Foundation Employee Benevolent Fund ( www.greencroft.org/foundation ).
