Phyllis Joan Whirledge, 97 died Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at The Waters of Wakarusa.
She was born October 14, 1927 in Goshen to Jesse “Alvin” and Katherine (Conklin) Swihart.
On May 4, 1947, she married the love of her life, Ernest Eugene Whirledge, at West Goshen Church. They shared 56 years of marriage before his passing on November 4, 2003.
She is survived by two sons, Michael (Peggy) Whirledge of Rochester and Ed (Vicki) Whirledge of Etna Green; seven grandchildren, Amy (Andy) Hamilton, Lesley (Tyler) Bass, Abby (Bobby) Raatz, Beth (Rich) O’Kelly, Andrea “Annie” (Joe) Schneider, Erin (Andrew) Kent and Jenna (Clint) Thomas; 11 great-grandchildren, Grace Hamilton, Sam Bass, Willa Hamilton, Bradey Raatz, Fenn Hamilton, Cooper Raatz, Colton Kent, Bailey "B" Kent, Rosie Schneider, Corbin Appleseth, and Maren Appleseth; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard Whirledge; and four sisters, Dora Cripe, Marilyn Yoder, Kenlyn "Woody" Sorg Haack, and Deborah Troyer.
A woman of many talents and a true "Good Citizen," Phyllis was a gifted vocalist. She dedicated her time to working in the Town Crest Junior High cafeteria and showcased her skills as a seamstress, also working at Leatherman Supply. Phyllis was also honored with the Tower Good Citizen Award, a testament to her dedication to her community. Above all, she cherished her role as a devoted housewife and found immense joy in caring for her family.
Phyllis will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her vibrant spirit, and her many contributions to her community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. An additional hour of visitation will take place on Monday, July 14, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at West Goshen Church.
Burial will follow the service at West Goshen Cemetery.
