Rev. Phyllis J. Carter, 92, of Goshen, died Thursday, August 10, 2023 at Majestic Healthcare of Goshen.
She was born in Middletown, Ohio on December 28, 1930 to William J. and Beatrice (Sloan) Noland who are deceased.
She married John W. Carter August 8, 1948, he died Sept. 4, 2010. They were married 62 years.
Phyllis is survived by two sons, Jay W. (Angie) Carter, Decatur and Jeff A. Carter, Goshen; three grandchildren, Sarah (George) Duke Tucson, Arizona, Keith Carter, Tampa, Florida, and Jed (Angel) Carter, Portland, Indiana; five great-grandchildren Rose, Eva, Jay Carter, Portland, Indiana and Carter & Marilyn Duke, Tucson, Arizona and a brother William (Carol) Noland, Kokomo, Indiana
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Peggy Lipinski and Patricia Stock.
Phyllis committed her life to God through serving the church. She was ordained to the ministry at Bethel Center Church of the Brethren Hartford City, Indiana, December 1969. She held several pastorates throughout Indiana and Florida. She retired from the pastorate from the Goshen City Church of the Brethren, Goshen, Indiana, in 1992. Throughout her ministry, she served on the denomination’s general board, chaired the World Ministry Commission, was district executive of the Florida/Puerto District, and was the moderator of the denomination. After retiring, she continued ministry by speaking at conferences and retreats. She also was a spiritual director. She helped established The Quiet Place Retreat Center at Camp Mack, Milford, Indiana. Additionally, she was the interim Vice President of Student Affairs at Goshen College in 1997.
She was a graduate of Kokomo High School 1948 and as a lifelong student and an avid reader. She studied at Ball State, Earlham School of Religion, Bethany Seminary, and Associated Biblical Seminary. She was a graduate of the Shalem Institute, Washington University D.C. She was a lay Cistercian of the Abbey of Gethsemani, New Haven, KY and followed the rule of St. Benedict. She was a former member of West Goshen Church of the Brethren.
Viewing will be held Tuesday, August 15, 2023 from 10 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at West Goshen Cemetery.
