Phillip R. Self

Phillip R. Self, 80, of Goshen, died peacefully Wednesday, October 5, surrounded by his family and close friends.

He was born April 14, 1942 in Goshen to Robert and Mary Jane (Woods) Self.

On July 12, 1964,  he married Diane K. Berkey in Goshen.

Diane survives along with their two sons, Randy (Brenda) Self, North Manchester and Bryan (Amy) Self, Goshen, five grandchildren, Derek, Des Moines, Iowa, Nathan, Cincinnati, Ohio, Justin, North Manchester, Tyler, South Bend and Carter, Goshen and a sister-in-law, Ruth Self, Fort Myers, Florida.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his only brother, Tucker Self.

Phil lived in Goshen his whole life, during his early years he was an Eagle Scout and served as a Scout Master. He graduated from Goshen High School in 1960 and from Ashland College, Ohio. He obtained his Master’s degree in education from Western Michigan University. He was a 5 ^th grade teacher at Shipshewana Elementary School from 1964 to 1970 and served as principal of Shipshewana Elementary School from 1970 to 1990. He then became principal of Westview Elementary School from 1990 until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of National Association of Elementary School Principals and was honored to receive the Sagamore of the Wabash, Indiana’s highest award given.

A member of The Gideons International, Phil and Diane served as church deacons at West Goshen Church since 1978. Phil also enjoyed his time on the Goshen City Cemetery Board, where he served as Chairman.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8, Friday, October 7, 2022 at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, October 8 at 11 a.m. at West Goshen Church, with an hour visitation prior to the service. Pastor Norm Replogle will officiate. The funeral service will be livestreamed at westgoshenchurch.org.
