Paul Groff Whirledge, 95, of Millersburg, died Friday, August 11, 2023 at Waterford Crossing in Goshen.
He was born November 5, 1927 on the family farm in Elkhart County to Orlando and Lottie (Groff) Whirledge. Except for the last two months, he lived his entire life on the farm that he loved.
Paul graduated from Millersburg High School in 1945. On November 12, 1950 he married Margaret Ann Blood at Bristol United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on March 3, 2009.
He is survived by a daughter, Karen S. (Bob) Richter of St Joseph, Michigan; two sons, Gary M. (Rose Ann) Whirledge of Goshen and Ben R. (Marie) Whirledge of Millersburg. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Diane (Jason) Tennenhouse, Julie (Brian) Cummins, Robert (Jenny) Whirledge, Michael (Jayne Van Schaick) Richter, Matthew Richter, Emily (Andrew) Hobey, Brian (Rebekah) Whirledge, and John (Chelsea) Whirledge, and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lanetia Stutsman and Pauline Myers.
Vocal music was an important part of Paul's life. Accompanied by his wife on the piano or organ, he sang for over 50 weddings, many funerals, church services and other special occasions. He also sang in a men's quartet and with a larger men's group called the Menno Singers (later Men of Music).
Paul worked on the farm his entire life, first in partnership with his father and later with his sons. In addition he drove a school bus for 12 years followed by a 27 year career at Carriage Inc. At age 71 he started working part-time at Menard's where he thoroughly enjoyed greeting and helping customers for the next 21 years.
He was known for his quick smile and sense of humor. In later years his pockets were full of candy and pens, which he freely gave to his friends, old and new.
Paul was a life-long member of Zion Community Church in Millersburg where he and Margaret were very active. He was a member of the Millersburg Lions Club for 58 years and served on the Interra Credit Union board of directors for 21 years.
The family would like to express their great appreciation to the staffs of Firefly Home Care and Waterford Crossing Assisted Living and Health Care.
