Paul E. Shaum, 93, of Goshen, died early Thursday morning, January 31, 2013, at Greencroft Goshen Health Care. He was born February 16, 1919 in Goshen to Isaiah and Lizzie (Weaver) Shaum. He married Lodema Harter March 1, 1941 in Elkhart. She died July 10, 1963. He then married Ruth E. Schlabach in Goshen April 17, 1965. She survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Norma (Bradley) Chatfield of Marietta, Ga., and Marolyn Millar, Carolyn (Rich) Coodens and Elizabeth (Randy) Noland, all of South Bend; three sons, Steven Shaum of Nappanee, Randall (Jean) Shaum of Two Rivers, Wis., and Jerrol (Mary Ann Weber) Shaum of Goshen; 12 grandchildren, Benjamin and Jamison Peters, Timothy and Scott Keller, Todd and Andrew Millar, Michelle Abel, Jenelle Miller, Tye and Corey Noland, Audrey Miller and Jennifer Shaum; 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Keller; a grandson, Adam Shaum; eight sisters and five brothers. He was a member of Benton Mennonite Church and instrumental in starting Hudson Lake Mennonite Church and Prairieview Missionary Church. A finish carpenter, Mr. Shaum worked for Portage Realty and Brown & Brown Construction. He loved to garden and was a talented wood worker. Friends may call 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, February 3, 2013, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, 1911 S. Main St., Goshen. A meal will be served at 11 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2013, prior to the 12:30 p.m. funeral service at Benton Mennonite Church, 15350 C.R. 44, Goshen. Pastors Brenda Meyer and Doug Kaufman will officiate. Burial will follow in Olive West Cemetery, Elkhart. Memorial contributions may be given to World Missionary Press or Goshen Care at Home Hospice.
