Paul Ervin Branson, 84, of Elkhart, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Kindred Valley View Nursing and Rehabilitation after an extended illness.
Paul was born on October 26, 1931, in Goshen to Ada and Otis Branson.
He is survived by daughters Paula J. (Travis) Wise of Portage; Diana S. (Rick) Monroe of Indianapolis, Laura J. (J. Michael) Martin of Mint Hill, NC; and sons David B. (Jeanie Kelly) Branson and John P. (Amy) Branson, both of Elkhart; and their mother, Phyllis J. Branson of Elkhart, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Other survivors include brothers Dale Branson and Lamar (Wilma) Branson, both of Goshen.
He was preceded in death by stepfather Fred Eddy; a brother Steven Eddy; and a sister, Avadell Torres.
Paul graduated from Goshen High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 through 1954 aboard the USS Bowers and the USS Gordius as a radarman. After an honorary discharge, he earned BS and MS degrees at Purdue University. After graduating, he became a teacher and taught General Science, Special Education, Physical Education, and Drivers Education in the Goshen, Elkhart, and South Bend school systems, retiring in 1996. During the nearly 40 years he taught, he also coached basketball, track, and football at the middle school and freshman levels.
Paul enjoyed attending Purdue University football games for nearly 25 years, as well as Central and Memorial High School football and basketball games. He was a lifetime member of the Purdue Alumni Association; and a member of national, state, and local Retired Teachers Associations. During his retirement Paul enjoyed gardening, painting, sports, and history. However, his real enjoyment came from being around his family. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Friends may call on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 11:00 am. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, Indiana. Heart to Heart Hospice Chaplain, Sunday Adelakin will officiate. Graveside services will be held at West Goshen Cemetery immediately following the memorial service.
