Paul Walter Smucker, 84, of Centerville, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his sleep January 21, 2021.
He was born north of Canada (as he would always say) in Detroit, Michigan on April 25, 1936 to Paul and Florence (Elliott) Smucker.
Walt is survived by his wife of 58 years Jo Ann (Bandura) Smucker; his two children Laura (Ted) Ingling and Richard (Rosalind) Smucker; two grandchildren, Gretchen and Ben and two step grandchildren, Grant and Rachel. Other survivors include his sister Marilyn Messel and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Albert K. Messel.
He graduated from Penn State University College of Science in 1961 after serving in the United States Marine Corp from 1954-1957. He worked as a computer programmer for NCR and eventually became Country Manager of Ethiopia, Djibouti and Sudan. While working for NCR he had the opportunity to live and travel around the world. After retiring from NCR he purchased four Mail Boxes Etc franchises.
Hobbies included watching his Penn State Nittany Lions, Cincinnati Bengals, NASCAR and attending his grandchildren's soccer games. He enjoyed the Dayton Philharmonic and the Dayton Opera, and participated as a supernumery in two operas. His retirement activities included volunteering at his grandchildren's elementary school in South Lebanon, Ohio, volunteering through Centerville Schools Achievement Club after school program, volunteering at the Centerville Summer Concert series, and participating in the Final Salute ceremonies at Dayton National Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 30, 2021 from 9:30 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Rev. Terry Tyler will officiate.
Burial will follow at Elkhart Prairie Cemetery, Goshen.
In lieu of flowers, friends and families can make donations to The Final Salute Society Monument Maintenance Fund #1573 The Dayton Foundation, 1401 S Main St #100, Dayton, OH 45409 or the Alzheimer Association. In memory of Walt, please enjoy a large bowl of homemade ice cream with lots of maple syrup!
