Oneta R. Bates, 84, of Goshen, died early Sunday morning, August 10, 2014, at her home. She was born January 12, 1930 in Goshen to Claude and Fern (Hepler) Gardner. On January 24, 1948 she married W. Roy Bates at the First Brethren Church in Goshen. He died July 27, 2004. She is survived by a daughter, Jolene (Tom) Olds, of New Paris; a son, Steven (Carolyn) Bates, of Elkhart; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; two sisters, Marjorie Voorhees and Sharon Gooch; and a brother, Garry Gardner. Mrs. Bates was a lifelong area resident who farmed for 15 years with her husband. She worked at Salem Bank for 20 years retiring as branch manager and supervisor. She was a member at Jefferson Community Church. Friends may call Tuesday, August 12, 2014, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, where a 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2014, funeral service will be held. Pastor Ron Spyker will officiate. Burial will follow at Brown Cemetery, Millersburg. Memorial contributions may be given to Jefferson Community Church or Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart.
