Nelson L. Bushong, 96 of Goshen died Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at Greencroft Healthcare.
He was born September 30, 1923 in Elkhart to Hugh and Marie (Unrue) Bushong.
On December 12, 1954 he married Evelyn L. Hartzler in Goshen. She died March 29, 2017.
Survivors include two sons, Garen (Susan) Bushong of North Manchester and Steven (Helen) Bushong of Goshen; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Lou Tirschek of Elkhart.
A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Bushong served in the Asiatic Theatre during WWII. He was a medical clerk typist with the 77 th Infantry and saw action on Okinawa, Japan. He was promoted to supervisor and directed the 8-1 administrative section at division headquarters. Nelson was then transferred to the 7 th Calvary in Tokyo, Japan and discharged as a Sergeant Major in 1946.
After returning home, he began work as a teller in the banking industry, eventually retiring as Senior Vice President and Treasurer of the Administration Division at Salem Bank and Trust Company.
As a member of 8 th Street Mennonite Church, Nelson served on various boards and commissions. He was a member of The Exchange Club of Goshen and volunteered as a Red Coat at Goshen Hospital.
He also served as a board member with the following groups; Crown International; Goshen Hospital and Healthcare Foundation; American Red Cross; Goshen Chamber of Commerce; and Elkhart River Restoration.
Visitation will begin Monday, December 30, 2019 at 9 a.m. prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen. Pastor Brenda Sawatzky Paetkau, 8 th Street Mennonite Church, will officiate.
Burial will follow at Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
