Myrl Andrew Nafziger, 90, of Goshen, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 30, 2017.
He was born October 22, 1926 in Chenoa, Illinois to John Monroe and Anna Elizabeth (Litwiller) Nafziger. Myrl grew up in Hopedale, Illinois and graduated from Goshen College in 1950 and Northwestern University Medical School in 1954.
He married Twila June Hostetler on June 22, 1952. He served a one-year internship at Akron Children’s Hospital, followed by a residency in Pediatrics. In 1957, he moved to Wadsworth, Ohio and opened his pediatric office. Dr. Nafziger retired from full-time practice in 1992. In 2012, he moved to Greencroft Goshen and joined Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship.
Myrl was a devoted father and grandfather, and lived a full life of service to his family, church and community. He was a member of Bethel Mennonite Church from 1957-2012. He was actively involved with the Wadsworth Hospital Mental Health Committee, Wadsworth Rittman Hospital Medical Staff, Wadsworth Shade Tree Commission, Rotary, and was team doctor for numerous Wadsworth High School sport teams.
His primary hobby was flower and vegetable gardening. He was known for his sense of humor and beautiful orchids, African violets, geraniums, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes.
Myrl was predeceased by his wife, Twila; brother, John Marvin Nafziger; and sister, Mary Katherine Nafziger.
He is survived by his children, Mark (Cleo) Nafziger of Logan, Utah, Ned (Jane Yousey) Nafziger of Canton, Ohio; Anne (Joseph S. Bertino, Jr) Nafziger of Schenectady, New York; Daniel (Evie) Nafziger of Goshen and Jon (Carol Grace Hurst) Nafziger of Crozet, Virginia; grandchildren, Justin (Riona Skinner), Seth, Alanna, Adam, Gaia, Benjamin, David, Jaimie Bertino, Christopher (Ashley) Bertino, Elizabeth (Jordan Miller), Lucas, Joel, Anna, Andrew, Michael, and Gabriel; four great-grandchildren; sister Anna Ruth (Maynard) Good; sisters-in-law, Marian Hostetler, Doris (James) Miller, Beth (Lee Roy) Berry; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Friends may call Sunday, April 2, 2017 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoder Culp Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 3, 2017, starting at 11 a.m. at Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship, 2509 Berkey Ave, Goshen.
Private burial will be in Elkhart Prairie Cemetery, Goshen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Mennonite Central Committee.
