Morris Herring, Jr., 92, of Goshen, died at his home Thursday afternoon, January 26, 2012. He was born in Goshen August 25, 1919 to the late Morris and Irene (Williamson) Herring, Sr. He married Margaret "Peg" Scherbaum May 25, 1941. She survives. Also surviving are four children, C. David (DeLayne) Herring of Coronado, California, Barbara Jo Grostick of Henderson, Nevada, Rebecca (David) Witherspoon of Richardson, Texas, and Elizabeth "Beth" (Mike) Kimlick of Burke, Virginia; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two siblings, Robert Herring and Mary Neff. A lifelong Goshen resident and member of First United Methodist Church, Mr. Herring graduated from Goshen High School in 1938 where he was an outstanding basketball player. He worked as a supervisor at Johnson Controls for 45 years. A World War II veteran, he served with the US Army as a commander of a tank destroyer. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, earning a Bronze Star for heroic action on the field. He volunteered as a Boy Scout leader and received the Silver Beaver Award. He enjoyed singing in barber shop quartets. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, January 30, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home and 9-10 a.m., Tuesday at the church. A 10 a.m., Tuesday, January 31, 2012, funeral service will be conducted at First United Methodist Church, Goshen. Pastors Ed and Brenda Fritz will officiate. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to the Autism Society or First United Methodist Church, Goshen.
