Miriam L. Bontreger, 91 of Goshen died Monday, June 18, 2018 at Greencroft Goshen Healthcare, where she had been since Jan. 2017.
She was born Feb. 14, 1927 in Goshen to Maynard and Mandella (Bachtel) Hoover.
On June 1, 1945 she married Vernon E. Bontreger at her home. Rev. Ira S. Johns officiated. They were married 72 years before Vernon’s death in Aug. 2017.
Survivors include six sons, Cecil J. (June) Bontreger of Goshen, John D. (Cindi) Bontreger of Fishers, Charles E. Bontreger and Jason P. (Linda) Bontreger, both of Goshen, Mark E. Bontreger of Watertown, South Dakota and Wesley J. (Cheryl) Bontreger of Goshen; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, John Hoover, Glen Flora, Wisconsin; and two sisters, Lucile Chupp, Elkhart and Ruth (Dale) Patton, New Paris.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Lowell, Norman and Donald Hoover; and two sisters, Edith Johns and Arlene Hershberger.
Miriam was a loving homemaker and wonderful hostess. She and Vernon enjoyed hosting many Bethany Christian School students in their home and working in their garden. She was an avid reader and enjoyed embroidery and making quilts for the MCC Relief Sale.
Along with raising her family she worked as a secretary in the Goshen College Alumni Office and helped as church secretary at Clinton Frame Church during her husband’s tenure.
Visitation will be Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Clinton Frame Church, 63846 C.R. 35, Goshen, and from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2018 prior to the 2 p.m. funeral service also at the church.
Burial will follow at Clinton Frame Cemetery, Goshen.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that gifts be made to Clinton Frame Church.
