Melvin Jay Miller

Melvin Jay Miller, 89, of Goshen passed away Sunday, October 1, 2023 at Greencroft Healthcare.

He was born October 4, 1933 in Middlebury to John B. and Susie (Hershberger) Miller.

He married Iva Schmucker, daughter of Henry and Jemima (Kuhns) Schmucker, in Nappanee, on September 1, 1956.

Mr. Miller delivered bread, worked in the trailer manufacturing industry, sold Moorman Feeds, and processed meat. He also owned and operated his own home repair and remodeling business.

He worked hard and used his talents to help others. He loved to fish and cook. He would have fish fries for different groups to enjoy. He served in the 4-H Lamb Club and was a trustee, usher and bus driver for First Baptist Church, Goshen, where he was a member.  While wintering in Sarasota, Florida he served as a Deacon at Colonial Oaks Baptist Church. His love for Jesus was shown through his service to others and for the love and care of his family.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by sisters, Mary J. Schmucker and Darlene J. Hochstetler; two infant children, Nancy and Ronnie; and a grandson, Melvin James Sumpter.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Iva; three daughters, Loretta (Mike) Sumpter of Milford, Kathy (Martin) Shearer of Goshen and Cheryl (Brad) Sorensen of Milford; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Polly J. Miller of Middlebury; and a brother, Alvin J. Miller of Elkhart.

Friends may call Thursday, October 12, 2023 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service Friday, October 13, 2023 at First Baptist Church, 1011 South Indiana Ave., Goshen. Pastor Brant VanHooser will officiate.

Burial will follow in Thomas Cemetery, Goshen.
