Melvin E. Bachman, 83, of Goshen, died Monday morning, August 4, 2008, at Greencroft Healthcare where he had been a resident the past two and a half years. He was born in Pomeroy, Iowa, on June 9, 1925, to Aaron and Emma (Egli) Bachman. He married Erna Roth on February 8, 1948 in Milford, Nebraska. She survives. A Goshen resident since 1985, Mr. Bachman was a farmer and feed salesman in Iowa and from 1985 to 2004 he was a craftsman at Swartzendruber Hardwoods in Goshen. He was a member of East Goshen Mennonite Church where he served as an usher. In Iowa he was a member of the Manson Mennonite Church and there he also served as an usher and an Elder. He is survived by his wife, Erna; three daughters, Nancy (Larion) Swartzendruber of Goshen, Shelley (Scott) Holland of Pomeroy, Iowa and Anita (Mark) Gingerich of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota; two sons, John (Julie) Bachman of Goshen and Steven (Brenda) Bachman of Middlebury; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Laurene Yoder of Iowa City, Iowa, and Dorothy Bender of Kalona, Iowa,; and a brother, Lloyd Bachman of Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Elna Brenneman, Laverne Slagle, Vilma Brenneman and Ellen Miller; and three brothers, Elmer, Lyle and Merle Bachman; and a granddaughter, Maria Bachman in 1994. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m., August 8 and 9:00 to 10:45 a.m., Saturday, August 9, at the North Goshen Mennonite Church. An 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2008, memorial service will be held at the North Goshen Mennonite Church. Pastor Steve Slagel of the East Goshen Mennonite Church will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to World Missionary Press or East Goshen Mennonite Building Fund.
