Mary Catherine Berkey, 92, of Goshen, died Friday evening, January 26, 2007, at Goshen General Hospital where she had been a patient since Sunday. She had been in failing health the past 3 years. She was born in Wakarusa, Indiana, to Adam and Martha (Wagner) Culp. She married C. Stanley Berkey on June 6, 1936 in Goshen. He survives. A lifelong resident of the area, Mrs. Berkey, was a member of the Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church where she was a member of the Faith Builders Sunday School class, participated in the Women’s Missionary Society and helped in the kitchen with church meals. She attended both Wakarusa High School and Goshen High School and was a member of the Elkhart County Extension’s City Homemakers Club. She enjoyed playing the piano. Mrs. Berkey worked for Miles Laboratory for 30 years, retiring in 1977. She also worked and volunteered at The Pantry at Goshen General Hospital. Mrs. Berkey is survived by her husband; two daughters, Joyce Furfaro and Jeanette (Robert) Salisbury, both of Goshen; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, June and Jolene in a car/train accident in 1960; a sister, Dora Wise; and four brothers, Walter, Ray, Mervin and Clarence Culp. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, January 30, 2007, at the Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church. A 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 31, 2007, funeral service will be conducted at the church. Pastor Bill Richardson and former Pastor George Nantz of the Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church will officiate. Burial will be in the West Goshen Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel College, Mishawaka.
