Marvin D. Riegsecker

Senator Marvin D. Riegsecker, 71, of Goshen, died early Tuesday morning, September 30, 2008, at Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, after a year and a half battle with cancer. He was born in Elkhart County on July 5, 1937, to Levi and Mayme (Kauffman) Riegsecker.  He married Norma J. Shrock on August 3, 1958 in Goshen.  She survives. Senator Riegsecker lived in the Goshen and Millersburg area all of his life except for ten years, 1957 to 1967 when he lived in Colorado.  A 1956 graduate of Millersburg High School and from the University of Colorado in 1967 with a degree in Pharmacy. A member of College Mennonite Church, Goshen; he worked at Phillips Pharmacy, Hooks Drugs, Walgreen’s and Meijer, all of Goshen.  Senator Riegsecker served as Elkhart County Coroner from 1976 to 1984; as County Commissioner from 1984 to 1987; and as state senator from 1987 to 2008.  In 2008 he received the Sagamore of Wabash Award. He is survived by his wife, Norma; two sons, Steven (Andrea) Riegsecker of Chicago, Illinois, and Michael (Ann) Riegsecker of Appleton, Wisconsin; two grandsons, Alec and Drew Riegsecker; his step-mother, Irene Riegsecker of Goshen; three brothers, Kieth L. Riegsecker of Goshen, Verl L. (Pat) Riegsecker of Indianapolis, and Dennis R. (Jean) Riegsecker of Lincoln, Nebraska; and a sister, Joyce Craven of Middlebury. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Orval Lee Riegsecker in 2005. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, October 3 at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. A Saturday, October 3, 2008, funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. at College Mennonite Church, Goshen.  Pastor Klaudia Smucker will officiate. Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to ADEC, Mennonite Disabilities, or to the Goshen Hospital Foundation for the Cancer Care Center.
