Martha J. Steury, 88, of Goshen died Thursday, January 30, 2020 at home.
She was born at home, December 4, 1931 near Craigville, Indiana, to Charles and Emma (Brewster) Liby.
On December 24, 1950 she married Lores E. Steury in Decatur. He died December 12, 2008.
Survivors include a daughter, Lori (Ivy) Steury of Goshen; four sons, Timothy (Diane Noel) Steury of Potlatch, Idaho; Mark (Anne) Steury of South Whitley; Douglas (Cheryl Bennett) Steury of Bloomington; and Paul (Michele) Steury of Goshen; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four sisters-in-law, Edna Bryant, Edith Arnold, Sharron Liby and Valera Liby.
Along with her parents and loving husband of 57 years, Martha was preceded in death by four brothers, Dale, Ralph, John and David Liby.
A member of Goshen City Church of the Brethren, Martha was passionate about helping others. She was head cook at Camp Mack in the early 1970s and was a nursing aide in home healthcare for many years.
Martha had a huge heart, with a special affection and love for the homeless and other disadvantaged people. She was known as the “Grandma of The Window,” a local refuge, and was voted “Miss Congeniality” at the 4-H Elkhart County Fair Senior Queen Contest.
Along with her husband, Martha volunteered at a homeless shelter in Arizona for 15 years.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 1 p.m. at Goshen City Church of the Brethren, 203 N. 5th St., Goshen.
Memorial gifts may be directed to The Window or Goshen Home Care and Hospice.
