Margarete Toler, 79, of Goshen, died Saturday afternoon, December 13, 2008, at her home. She was born in Mainz, Germany on February 6, 1929, to Andreas and Maria (Teufele) Laubenheimer. She married Henry J. Mullet in Goshen in 1953. After his death she married John E. Toler on January 13, 1974 in Goshen. He died March 31, 1978. A Goshen resident since 1953, she had worked as a fabric cutter for both Goshen Cushion and Kinders Manufacturing. She had also worked at Bower’s Drive Inn and Luke Jewelers. During her active years, Mrs. Toler was a member of the Women of the Moose. Margarete loved Glenn Miller tunes since listening to Miller’s band on the BBC as a young girl living in the basements of bombed out buildings during World War II. As horrifying as those years of war were, she remembered Glenn Miller’s music over the radio as maybe the only fond memory of that terrible time in her life. She is survived by a daughter, Pam (Donald) Lewis of Goshen; two grandchildren, Melissa and Jeffery; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Elsa (Thomas) Steele of Columbus, Ohio, and Ursula (Herbert) Kempe of New Jersey. She was preceded in death by both of her husbands. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at Margarete’s house on Cheryl Street. A private family burial of cremains will be held in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Center of Hospice and Palliative Care, Elkhart.
