Magdalene Liechty

June 19, 1931 — August 18, 2014

Magdalene "Maggie" Liechty passed away in her home on Monday, August 18, 2014 following a lengthy illness. She was born in Berne, Indiana, on June 19, 1931, to Estella (Moser) and Marcus Lehman, and lived in Berne until August of 2007 when she moved to Goshen. She was the youngest of 4 children, having twin brothers Ronald and Donald Lehman, and a living sister, Berneda Harb Hart, of Lexington, Virginia. On August 26, 1950, she married her grade school sweetheart, Fredrick H. Liechty. He preceded her in death January 19, 2012. Together they were active in the Mennonite Church and were committed to showing God's love in concrete ways. She was a former member of First Mennonite Church, Berne, and current member of Eighth Street Mennonite Church and closely affiliated with Emmaus Road Mennonite Fellowship, Berne. Surviving are two children, Nancy Liechty Loewen (Jake) and Mary Liechty-Caskey (Doug) both of Goshen, and 4 grandchildren, Emma Dugger (Alex) of Goshen; Nick (Jana) Loewen, of San Francisco, California, Jesse Loewen, and Alex Caskey both of Goshen, and one great grandchild, Elliott Dugger. Despite being housebound for 30 years, Maggie remained vitally involved with her family, her many friends and the world. Her deep spirituality and compassion connected her to others as a counselor, confidante and advocate. A keen curiosity and agile mind pushed her to read and correspond widely. During her last year of life caregivers Roxanne, Linda, and Mary went beyond the call of duty and became like family to her. A service of remembering, honoring and celebrating Maggie's life will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at Swiss Village, Berne. Preferred memorial are to Mennonite Mission Network or Mennonite Disaster Service Yoder-Culp Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
