Mabel Steiner

Mabel Steiner, 92, of Goshen, passed away Wednesday evening, December 14, 2016 at Greencroft Healthcare.

She was born April 6, 1924 in Elkhart to Calvin and Myrtle (Grosh) Smeltzer.

On June 14, 1947 she married Elno W. Steiner at Olive Mennonite Church.  They were happily married for 62 years until his death October 16, 2009.

Survivors include three children, Charles (Cheryl) Steiner of Goshen, Carol (Dan) Scheerer pf Cincinnati, Ohio and Gloria (Michael) Hood of Indianapolis; five grandchildren, Chaun (Jodie), Chane and Chanda Steiner and Scott and Amy Hood; four great grandchildren, Braeden, Bronson, Aleaha and Alexavier Steiner; and three brothers, Sam Smeltzer of Elkhart, Walter (Doris) Smeltzer of Peoria, Illinois and Carl (Margaret) Smeltzer of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sons, David Lee, Timothy Ray and Donald Lynn; three siblings, Clyde and Loyal Smeltzer and Lois King; and three sisters-in-law, Viola, Ruby and Lois Smeltzer.

A longtime area resident, Mabel earned an associate’s degree from Goshen College in Bible.  She helped her husband with pastoral care and pastoral administrative tasks.  She also worked at Greencroft Sideboard and Brenneman Financial Services, Ohio, as an administrative assistant.  She was a disciplined, conscientious, faithful and loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She enjoyed reading, volunteering, sewing, quilting and gardening. Mabel treasured time spent with children and grandchildren.  She and Elno traveled to their homelands of Switzerland and Germany and visited the Holy Land.

Friends may call Saturday, December 17, 2016, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home and an hour prior to the 2 p.m., Sunday, December 18, funeral service at Olive Mennonite Church, Elkhart.  Pastors Kevin and Sharon Yoder will officiate.

Burial will follow in Olive West Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Mennonite Central Committee.
