Lucinda Laverne (Burkey) Bachman

Lucinda LaVerne (Burkey) Bachman, 94, died early Friday morning March 19, 2010, at The Maples at Waterford Crossing.  She had been in declining health since 2008.  She was born in Milford, Nebraska on October 25, 1915, to the late Mattie (Troyer) and Joseph Burkey.  She married Richard Christian Bachman on November 24, 1938, in Milford, Nebraska. He preceded her in death on January 8, 1990. A homemaker, Mrs. Bachman was a member of the College Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday School and served on the funeral food committee.  She also refinished furniture, painted, wallpapered, quilted, and was a seamstress.  She enjoyed going to Canada on fishing trips.  Along with fishing she also enjoyed golfing and bowling.  She enjoyed playing card games, especially Rook and Dominos.  Lucinda and Richard spent many winters in Sarasota, Florida.  Richard and she also provided a community home for Oaklawn Mental Health Center.  She is survived by one daughter, Marianne (Rodney) Pletcher, Goshen; two sons, Joseph Bachman, Bristol, Frederick Bachman, Adrian, Michigan; one son-in-law, Harold (Elaine Unzicker) Kauffman, Goshen; one sister, Betty (Mel) Yoder, Goshen; one brother, Arnold (Phyllis) Burkey, Nebraska; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Jean Kauffman on March 22, 2005; one sister Doris Inbody on October 30, 2009; and one brother, Kenneth Burkey.  Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, April 1, 2010, in the Gathering Room at College Mennonite Church, Goshen. An 11 a.m., Friday, April 2, 2010 memorial service will be held at College Mennonite Church.  Pastor Klaudia Smucker will officiate.  Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorials may be made out to the American Diabetes Association, College Church Kitchen, or Harbor Lights Hospice.
