Lores E. Steury

Lores E. Steury, 86, of Goshen, died late Friday evening, December 12, 2008, at his home.  He had been seriously ill since December 7. He was born in Berne, Indiana, on July 25, 1922, to Christian P. and Emilia (Habegger) Steury.  He married Martha Liby on December  24, 1950 in Decatur.  She survives. A gardener and weatherman, Mr. Steury moved to Goshen in 1976 to work as grounds keeper at Goshen College, retiring June 30, 1990.  Prior to that he had farmed in Berne and worked as caretaker at Camp Mack in Milford for six years.  A member of Goshen City Church of the Brethren, Mr. Steury served with CPS (Civilian Public Service) in Colorado and Wisconisn for 36 years.  He volunteered on a Heifer International cattle trip to Greece.  He enjoyed fishing and finding wild edibles. He is survived by his wife, Martha; a daughter, Lori (Ivy Petra) Steury of Goshen; four sons, Timothy (Diane Noel) Steury of Potlatch, Idaho, Mark (Mary Jo) Steury of Dayton, Ohio, Douglas (Cheryl Bennett) Steury of Bloomington, Illinois, and Paul (Michele) Steury of Goshen; eight grandchildren; and two sisters, Edith (Homer) Arnold of Berne and Edna Bryant, Pierceton. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mabel Steury and Dora Grambling; and two brothers, Howard and Ivan Steury. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening, December 14, 2008, at the family home, 303 Reservoir Place. A memorial service will take place in the spring of 2009 at Camp Mack.  Pastor Bev Weaver and family friend and former pastor Yvonne Riege will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center or Camp Mack.
