Lewis E. Wengerd, 69, passed away unexpectedly Friday night, July 24, 2009, at Goshen General Hospital Emergency Room. He was born to Ervin C. and Nancy (Yoder) Wengerd on May 27, 1940, in Meadville, Pennsylvania. He married Miriam L. Yoder on July 29, 1961, in Hadley, Pennsylvania. She survives. Lewis was a resident of the community since 1999 coming from Hadley, Pennsylvania. He worked as a truck driver most of his life, most recently with Hovis Trucking, a dairy transport of Grove City, Pennsylvania, for 17 years. He retired in 1988. In his early years, Lewis hunted deer and small game. He enjoyed attracting a variety of birds to his feeders. He took great pleasure in riding his bicycle in these later years. He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Charlene (Mike) Knowlton of Syracuse, Kathy (Mark) Mast of Goshen, Karen Wengerd of Defiance, Ohio, and Nancy Lee (Gary) Tener of Bourbon, Indiana; one son, Floyd L. (Lisa) Wengerd of Goshen; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters; Martha Schlabach of Asuncian, Paraguay, Mary Sue (Oscar) Schlabach of Cochranton, Pennsylvania, Keturah (Scott) Jones of Summertown, Tennessee, and Fannie May (Virgil) Kanagy of Blackville, South Carolina; and five brothers, John (Linda) Wengerd of Cochranton, Pennsylvania, Ervin (Loretta) Wengerd Jr. of Wagener, South Carolina, Rueben (Sally) Wengerd of Hadley, Pennsylvania, Martin (Barbara) Wengerd of Wagener, South Carolina, and Wallace (Lydia Ann) Wengerd of Wagener, South Carolina. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m., Sunday, July 26, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home and from 10-11 a.m., Monday, July 27, at the church. An 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 27, funeral service will be held at Maple City Chapel of Goshen with Reverend Ron Spyker of the Jefferson Brethren Church and Lewis’ brothers, John Wengerd and Ervin Wengerd Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Miller Cemetery of Goshen. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family.
