Leonard Hoogenboom, 90, of Goshen, died on Friday evening, May 22, 2009, the Maples, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 12, 1918 to Leendert S. and Archa (Elzerman) Hoogenboom. In December 1942 he married Eunice Dewey, in Yuma, Arizona. She preceded him in death in March 1990. Mr. Hoogenboom then married Nellie Caton in Goshen on December 19, 1991. She survives. A longtime Goshen resident, Mr. Hoogenboom worked at IXL, Railway Express Agency and Co-Lite Sign Company, retiring in 1980. He was an active member of the Elkhart Reformed Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder and Clerk of Session. He was a World War II Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Nellie; two daughters, Evelyn Speares of Pelion, South Carolina, and Janice (Greg) Elliott of Charlotte, North Carolina; two sons, Leonard A. (Pamela) Hoogenboom of Florence, South Carolina, and David (Frances) Hoogenboom of Lexington, South Carolina; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four brothers, B. Garritt (Linabelle) Hoogenboom, Albert (Mary) Hoogenboom and Cornelius (Shirley) Hoogenboom, all of Goshen, and Fred (Rita) Hoogenboom of Noblesville, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eunice; a grandson, Billy Ellison; and siblings, Agnes, Sebastion, Arthur and Abraham Hoogenboom. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 26, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A 7:00 p.m., funeral service will be conducted at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, with Rev. Keith Magill of the Elkhart Reformed Presbyterian church officiating. Friends may also call 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Friday, May 29, at Southland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel in West Columbia, South Carolina. A 3:30 p.m., May 29, funeral service will be conducted by Rev. John Rogers of the Edwards Memorial Associate Reformed Church of Cayce, South Carolina. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be given to the Elkhart Reformed Presbyterian Church.
