Katie E. Showalter, 87, of LaGrange, died early Saturday morning, November 3, 2007, at the home of her grandson. She was born in Arthur, Illinois, on March 14, 1920, to Edward J. and Annie (Gingerich) Yoder.  She married John L. Showalter on February 4, 1972 in Goshen.  He died October 27, 1984. A resident of the area since 1956, Mrs. Showalter worked at Goshen General Hospital and Mennonite Mutual Aid as well as caring for many elderly people in their homes and at the Thelma Schrock Homestead.  A member of Waterford Mennonite Church, she was active in the Waterford Mennonite Sewing Circle and Waterford Extension Homemakers.  She did voluntary service in Puerto Rico for two and a half years.  She also volunteered with Mennonite Board of Mission Auxiliary, The Window, Goshen General Hospital Auxiliary, and Greencroft Auxiliary.  She enjoyed singing and was a member of 15 different choral groups throughout her life. She is survived by a daughter, Edna V. (Lloyd) Brugger of Wolcottville; a step-son, Bernard (Miriam) Showalter of Salem, Oregon; three grandchildren, Karl (Cindy) Brugger of LaGrange, Suzy (Hans) Kanode of Weyers Cave, Virginia and Sharon (Steve) Norton of Halle, Germany; five step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.  Also surviving are three sisters, Susan Eash of Middlebury, Cora (Ray) Schrock and Martha Kaufman, both of Goshen; and a step-brother, Elroy (Marie) Miller of Millersburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Showalter; a step-daughter, Evelyn Bauer; four sisters, Alta Yoder, Irma Yoder, Fannie Stutzman and Mary Kauffman; and two brothers, Omer and Chris Yoder. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, November 8 at Waterford Mennonite Church, Goshen. A 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 9, 2007, funeral service will be conducted at Waterford Mennonite Church. Burial will be Yellow Creek Frame Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to Care at Home Hospice of Waterford Mennonite Church.
