Kathryn E. Berkey, 100, of Goshen, died Tuesday morning, February 16, 2010, at The Maples where she had been a resident since February 2009. She was born in Kokomo, Indiana, on September 22, 1909, to the late Vernon E. and Clara E. (Klingerman) Wise. She married Ray Wortinger in 1926. He died in March of 1939. She then married Dwight Berkey on December 31, 1939 in Goshen. He died December 26, 1987. A resident of the area since 1920, Mrs. Berkey was a homemaker and a member of the New Paris Church of the Brethren where she was a former member of the Ladies’ Aid. She loved taking care of her family and enjoyed feeding and watching birds and nature. Kathryn had a great wit and sense of humor. She enjoyed people and once she met you she became your grandmother. She is survived by three daughters, Norma Jean (Donald) Wortinger-McClure of South Bend, Beverly I. (Kary) Berkey Myers and Shirley L. (Gary) Berkey Juday, both of New Paris; a son, Ray Dean (Rosemary) Wortinger of Belfair, Washington; a brother, Kenneth D. Wise of Goshen; 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a step-son, John Berkey and a step-sister, Treva Malone. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, February 17, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. A 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 18, 2010, funeral service will be conducted at New Paris Church of the Brethren. Pastor Stan Godfrey will officiate. Burial will follow in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be made to New Paris Church of the Brethren.
